Cabinet has approved Guyana’s participation at a meeting of the Asset Recovery Agency Network for the Caribbean Region, which will be held in Miami, Florida, USA from June 28 to 29, 2017. The Department Against Transnational Crime of the Secretariat of Multi- Dimensional Security and the Organisation of American States (OAS) will host the meeting.
This was stated by Minister of State, Joseph Harmon today, at a post-Cabinet press briefing, at the Ministry of the Presidency.

Minister Harmon said that the participants will discuss the proposal by a group of experts to establish an Asset Recovery Inter Agency Network for the Caribbean Region to enhance international cooperation, both within the region and Assets Recovery Inter Agency Networks worldwide. Sydney James, Head of the Special Organised Crime Unit (SOCU) will attend the meeting.
Cabinet has approved the participation of Many Lab Inclusive Safe Cities, which will be hosted by the World Bank, USAID and the City of Medina, Columbia from May 29 to June 2, 2017. Minister Harmon said that the event will bring other policy makers, practitioners and researchers to exchange best practices explore innovations and discuss common challenges in multi-sector approaches to reduce urban violence and promote secure resistance. Superintendent Robert Tyndall of SOCU will attend the event.
Cabinet has also approved the attendance of several meetings of the institutions and agencies of the Caribbean Development Bank (IDB) to be held in Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Island from May 21 to 26, 2017. The meetings are; the 276th meeting of the Bank’s Board of Directors, the 34th meeting of the contributors of the Special Development Fund and the 47th meeting of the Bank’s Board of Directors and Governors, and a one- day retreat for the Bank’s Governors and Directors.
Minister Harmon stated that these meetings will take decisions concerning loans, guarantees and investments by the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), technical assistance and other operations of the Bank, and borrowing terms of Special Development Fund. Additionally, the bank will make pronouncement on Bank related policy matters, Minister Harmon said.
Tarachand Balgobin, Director of the Project Cycle Management Division and Sheranne Isaacs, Head of the Multilateral Financial Institution Division both of the Ministry of Finance will attend that meeting.
Guyana will participate in the 2017 forum in Ontario, Canada on May 21, 2017. This event will be hosted by the Guyana High Commission in Ottawa. Minister Harmon said this event will feature cultural and interactive activities, commercial and tourism displays and Guyanese cuisine. A cultural group from Surama, Region Nine will participate in the event.
Guyana will participate in the Fifth Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction to be held in Cancun, Mexico from May 24 to 26, 2017. Minister Harmon highlighted that the platform is aimed at the following objectives; to increase public awareness on natural technology environmental hazards posed to modern societies, and reduction of economic and social losses of disaster as is measured and the commitment by the public authorities to the reduction of risk.
His Excellency, Ambassador, Riyad Insanally to the OAS and Colonel Chabilall Ramsarup Director General of the Civil Defence Commission will attend the platform.
Additionally, Guyana will participate in a Foreign Language Annual Summer Camp in Dallon in Beijing, China from May 30 to June 19, 2017. Minister Harmon explained that participation in the camp is part of an ongoing programme of cooperation between the Dallon University of China and the University of Guyana, to provide Chinese Language training to Guyanese.
The Minister further explained that the course is a Certification Course in Chinese Language and Culture for Public Service Officials. Shamayne Balram, Foreign Service Officer Two and Grovanie Fletcher, Clerk Two General, of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will attend the camp.
