Government is reiterating the need for an efficient public service, one that represents all of the people of Guyana.
Minister of State, Joseph Harmon during his post-Cabinet media briefing today, repeated President David Granger’s statement that “Permanent Secretaries (PS’) should be permanent. He added that, “As servants of the people, it did not matter to us as a Government what political party you support, what is your affiliation, what is your sexual orientation, what is your geographic location from whence you came, what is your ethnic origin. We are looking for an efficient public service and we are looking for a public service that represents all the people of Guyana.”
Minister Harmon made it clear that at the level of the Permanent Secretaries, the goal is to ensure that “he or she is efficient, that they set high standards, that they recognise that they are the accounting officers of the Ministries and they are advisers to the Ministers on the Government’s policies.”
These were some of the issues raised during a recent interactive meeting which the President, Minister of Finance and other officials conducted with the PS’ and other Ministry officials. Future meetings are planned under the chairmanship of the PS of the Public Service Department, Reginald Brotherson and it is anticipated that these gatherings will come up with ways to improve the respective Ministries. These improvements will then be forwarded to Cabinet for consensus.
